World We Imagine Part 1

"Today we are redefining the geography of community and accepting shared accountability for common human values. We have the chance to extend the notion that all men are created equal to every human being on the planet. This will require global structures and products we are only beginning to imagine.... Each of us in our own way can contribute something by thinking -- and acting -- like a true global citizen. We have only one world for all of us on earth, and the future really is ours to create, in a world we dare to imagine together".

I feel like having to think of one way to make the world better can be really hard as it feels like there is so much to do that one might not know where to start and it can feel like a lot.

Over the years I’ve taken many classes that put this question into perspective. The many anthropology classes I’ve taken have conveyed the diversity of human experience and the idea of human complexity. There are many different cultures out there influence different behaviors in people of that certain culture. Culture is a powerful thing that can take part in our biology and change our genetics as well as behaviors. However, although there are these differences in cultures we all must make an effort to educate ourselves and understand others, as at the end of the day we all share common ancestors. In my Native North American class, I’ve learned a lot about many different groups and tribes and the injustices that some still face today. Further emphasizing the point that we all need to better educate ourselves and others about important issues and the different perspectives around us.

Another way that we can make the world a better place is by increasing our sustainability efforts. Some of the ways we can do this are by reducing waste, water waste, and our carbon footprint. Reducing our impact on the environment is vital to creating a better world. To make a more sustainable future for us all.

Although the idea of making the world a better place might seem overwhelming we can all start by contributing in small ways by spreading kindness. Acts of kindness no matter how small they might seem can always brighten someone’s day. And be a starting step in making the world a better place for us all.

  1. Hi Valerie, I think that what you wrote about are issues that are incredibly important! We as humans are incredibly diverse in our cultures, languages, and traditions. Despite our diversity though, we are all still human and are still related. I think we need to learn how to better understand and connect with one another, especially at a time when we are closest to global war that we have been in over half a century. Also, I think sustainability is incredibly important. It's a global crises that we haven't effectively addressed yet. I think that a potential way to take this a step further is to combine these two issues. A lot of people of color and also underrepresented groups are more effected by climate change and pollution that non-marginalized and minority groups. Finding a solution that addresses these two issues together could be incredible.

  2. Hi Monica, I really like how you said that even with spreading kindness we are enacting change. I think that it is really easy to get overwhelmed with everything that is going on in the world and not realize that even a small gesture might be enough to begging our journey to a more compassionate world. The lack of education is a huge part of the issue, is you don't go out and find the information you might not know that there might be issues that while they are not affecting you, they are affecting others in your community or in the world. Maybe finding a way to spread more awareness or requiring a course of current issues as part of school curriculum might be a good start.

  3. Hey Monica, I totally agree that learning more bout different people cultures and perspectives is a great way to make the world a better place. By educating yourself on others cultures, you learn can that the difference between your culture and someone else's might not be so different. Sustainable actions are another key element to making the world a better place, and is one that everyone can easily play a part in. Small changes from everyone in the world have the potential to build into mmense positive impacts.

  4. Hi Monica, I also agree on the importance of educating ourselves on different about issues and the world around us, because there are so many unique and personal perspectives we won't ever get to live. Trying to understand these perspectives can help us gain a better understanding of ways in which we can contribute too. It is easy to want to do so much, that we end up doing nothing because of that overwhelming feeling. Starting somewhere is always better than nothing, and contributing with acts of kindness is a great way to live. As a wise man once said, "Treat People With Kindness", and he seems to be doing just fine.
